What is the quickest way to kill bamboo?

Can you answer Littly bitty nothin''s question about Bamboo?:

My family has unwelcome bamboo on our property at the lake. We have tried salt, but we didn't water the salt, but what are other ways to kill it fast? It drives all of us nutts!!!!
Unfortunatly, the bush has been growing for a good 4, maybe 5, years. I don't know what type it is: it is very tall and looks like the the type you would imagine, thick stalks, long, thin leaves. But thanks for your suggestions!!!

The link the first person posted is a way to do it but it is time consuming. And that I fear that is the only way to really get rid of it. It sends rhizomes (underground runners or roots) about 6 to 8 inches under the ground so even pulling it would only result in propagating it further.
I hope you get it under control :) Good Luck

Cut it off within six inchs of the ground and pour stump killer on the cut while it is very fresh. Take a small hatchet out in a week and hack the tops a bit, then reapply the stump killer. If it rains within the week, do this a third time. You may have a couple of stragglers — be vigilant. And when you think it is really dead, pour gasoline or kerosene and light a match to it. You may think this sounds extreme, but bamboo is notoriously difficult to eradicate.

Bamboo is very difficult to kill. What you do depends on the type of bamboo you're trying to kill. It also depends on how well established the grove is.
