How can I get bamboo to grow?
Can you answer Xiang G's question about Bamboo?:
I have a small bamboo that has been growing from the leaves for about a year and it is about twice as tall as it was when I bought it. However, the actual stalk of the bamboo is the same height. There seems to be some hardened green paste on the top of the stalk (which was there when I bought it) and I wonder if that has anything to do with the stunted growth. Is there any way for me to get the actuall bamboo stalk to grow and not just the leaves?

Please tell me you're not putting it in the ground! If you put it in the ground, your neighbors w/ not be your freinds in a few years.
just keep the bamboo in water
Yes.Bamboo needs the ground to be moist.Put wood chips around it.Keep the wood chips moist and add some plant food every three months.During the winter months it needs less water.But during the summer keep it moist.
If it is a true bamboo the question would be "How can I stop it from growing?"
Are you referring to the plant called "Lucky Bamboo"? It's actually Dracaena not real bamboo.
Get a larger container/vase for it. The more room the bamboo has for it's roots… the larger it grows.
First a few facts. Bamboo is NOT a tree and does not grow or reproduce like one. It is a form of grass on steroids and is really aggressive. It reproduces by creepers (or rhizomes to be exact) Unless you want a thicket of it keep it in a large pot with plenty of room. It reproduces by runners Be ready to get down to weed out the excess plants as they will be there and can crowd a ceramic pot until it breaks. In a yard it will try to replace the original grass. And it does not cut that easy no matter how good a mower you have.

I think (no name) at level 3 has the right answer. From what you are describing, you have bought a "Lucky Bamboo", which is not really a bamboo, but a Dracaena. Check the site below for care and propagation instructions — or type "lucky bamboo care" into any search engine and you will get oodles of sites to check for even more information. Bamboo only takes over the yards of a lazy gardener with simple containment techniques you can keep it right where you want it. If you need to know how just ask. If it is acually real bamboo repot it in good garden soil fertilize it with 10-10-10. And be patient. When a bamboo has been divided it loses alot of it's energy and takes a couple of years to pop back. In it's 3rd and 4th year you should see significant growth. Most bamboo only shoot 1 time a year. So with a good dose of fertilizer you should see a big change.
