Removing debris like twigs, big lumps, rocks and other unwanted things from good soil can be done by a special tool called a garden sieve. A tool that is used to filter or separate the unwanted particles is the definition of a sieve. The sifting and filtering process is handled by using a mesh screen or netting.

The word filter is the basis for the word sieve. Another common type of sieve is a flour sifter, which used not only to separate, but to aerate the flour. Garden Sieves are a great tool for sorting finished compost from larger, matter that is unfinished. A sieve can also help you sift good soil from basic lawn dirt that includes clumps,weeds, rocks and leaves. When it comes to spreading items on the garden or lawn like fertilizer, top soil, compost, or basic soil amendments a sieve is a wonderful tool.

Sieves can be free standing or hand held depending upon the size of the job. This kind of sieve is composed of a fixed base, and a curved surface, creating a chute-like sieve, and the ability to interchange screens of different sizes, depending on the material being sorted.
