Pros and Cons of Bamboo Flooring

By Carol Coutts

Bamboo floors have become a hot trend in the marketplace led by consumers wanting green products. We are going to take a look at the pros and cons of bamboo flooring to see if this is the product for you.

Pros of bamboo flooring

Environmentally friendly & Renewable - For some consumers this is the key pro for bamboo flooring as it is extremely fast growing as compared to hardwood. Bamboo is a grass and can be harvested from the same plant again and again making it a renewable and sustainable resource.

Appearance - One of the pros of bamboo is it has a stunning appearance and gives you a truly unique floor. It is available in a variety of shades from its light natural color to darker shades achieved by the process of carbonization. The bamboo is exposed to steam and pressure which darkens the sugar content in its fibers. Besides carbonization, staining has opened the door to many more colors.

Durability: Bamboo is durable, hard and stable. Its hardness rating is higher than many hardwoods and is fifty percent more stable and harder than Red Oak.

Affordability: Prices of bamboo floors have come down due to consumer demand and compete most favorably with hardwood flooring.

Installation: It can be installed in most areas of the home and installation is not complicated.

As you can see there are a lot of advantages in the pros and cons of bamboo flooring of which some can also be disadvantages which we will take a look at.

Cons of bamboo flooring

Renewability - The first being bamboos rapid renewability has some manufacturers harvesting it before it is mature therefore not producing quality, hard floor planks. Flooring that is made before the bamboo is at least 4 years old is soft and may easily warp and dent.

Low quality production - Another thing to be careful of is low quality production that uses low quality glue with high levels of formaldehyde. Chinese glue is often high in formaldehyde so you want a manufacturer that uses a high quality glue such as European E-1 that will exceed indoor air quality requirements for formaldehyde emmisions. You want to ensure the company you purchase from uses the best part of the bamboo and that they have quality finishes that do not contain higher levels of VOCs. Check the companies product specification or Materials Safety Data Sheets to make sure the finishing product is non-toxic and to see the glue emissions.

Warranty - Make sure you take a look at the manufacturers warranties. A quality manufacturer will likely warranty their bamboo flooring for at least 10 years structurally and 25 years on pre-finishing.

When looking at the pros and cons of bamboo flooring there are definitely many advantages of bamboo floors. As when anything is popular in the market there is always substandard products around so you need to do your home work and shop around.
